Literacy

Ready to Read

Every ChildThe five practices of Reading, Talking, Singing, Writing and Playing with your child every day help develop the foundational skills that they need to be Ready to Read.

The LPL employs these principles at our various Storytimes. Click here to find specific days and times of the sessions on our calendar page.

There are 30 Early Literacy Kits conveniently stowed in backpacks available for checkout. Stop by the Children's Room or check our online catalog (search "Literacy Kits") to see what kits are available.

The StoryWalk is set up during warm weather on the Dinosaur Garden lawn. There are more than a dozen different illustrated stories that are rotated on the cards set up for a peaceful and educational stroll. The Story Walk also goes on the road Tuesdays from late June through mid-August, to accompany the Storytime in the Park event near the Wegmans Boundless Playground in Onondaga Lake Park.

1000 Books

1000 books logobanner

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to read aloud to their children daily. Share the fun of reading aloud with your young children, and help them acquire skills they’ll use when they start kindergarten.

The LPL 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Reading Club rewards children for reaching milestones on the way to the big number.

Join the club to find cool links about reading with your child. You can download a reading log, too. Bring the log to the reference desk in the Children's Room at every 100-book increment for your child to claim a prize!
Children birth to age 5 are eligible with a parent or guardian. The club meets every so often to socialize and exchange information.

Logging Books

Liverpool Public Library is excited to announce that we will now be using READsquared to log books in our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program!

Simply go to lpl.ny10.readsquared.com and register yourself and your child. Then start reading! For every 100 books that you read to your child, s/he will get a prize from the library!

Have you previously used Beanstack to log your books with LPL? These accounts will no longer be active, but we can get you caught up in READsquared with a simple email to our staff.

Prefer to keep a paper log? That's fine too! Just bring it in and we will get you the appropriate prizes.
