Computers at the Library http://lpl.org/computers-and-computing/library-computers http://lpl.org/computers-and-computing/library-computers

Liverpool Public Library has offered public access computers since 1981.  We started with an Apple II+ computer in our children's room.  Today, we offer the following computer resources to our users:

Computers in the Adult Area

11 Dell PC Internet browser computers

Nine of these computers are reserved for 30 minute time blocks.  The other two are reserved for short 15 minute appointments.  The internet browser computers are equipped with USB ports to allow patrons to save documents to USB flash drives.  Software available includes Microsoft Word 2007, Excel 2007, Powerpoint 2007, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox web browsers.  WordPad and Word are available for to take notes or to copy and paste content from websites.

2 Dell PC "Workstation Lite", 1 Apple iMac "LITE" computers

In addtion to the capabilities of the Internet browser computers listed above, these computers have iTunes and have the ability to read CDs and DVDs. The Apple iMac has the ability to burn CD/DVD media. You can reserve them for 60 minutes.

4 Dell PC Quiet Zone Workstation Computers

Four Dell PC Internet computers are available for 90 minute appointments. These computers have the same capabilities as the "Workstation Lite" computers described above, but can be reserved for a longer period. Because these computers are in the Quiet Zone at the back of the library, patrons are not permitted to work together on these computers.

1 Dell PC WORKSTATION WITH SCANNER

A Dell PC with flat-bed scanner attached is available for 90 minute appointments. This computer has the same software as the Quiet Zone workstations, plus photo scanning and processing software.

2 APPLE iMAC COMPUTERS, 1 WITH SCANNER

Two Apple iMac Internet computers are available for 90 minute appointments. These computers feature  software for word processing, photo scanning, digital imaging, CD/DVD burning, page layout, and more.

Since the workstation computers are often busy,  it's best to reserve ahead of time. Not all computers have the same hardware and software setup.

5 APPLE iMAC LAPTOPS

Five Apple Mac laptop computers with Internet capabilities are available for 60 minute appointments. These computers have the same software as the Apple iMac Lite (see above). Internet browsers include Safari, Firefox, and Google Chrome. To reserve one of these, use the PC Reservation station in the library, selecting "Mac Laptop In-house" and take the PC Reservation slip to the Circulation Desk. You must leave a valid New York State Drivers License or NYS-issued non-Drivers ID at the Circulation Desk when using one of these laptops.

Tutoring and Testing Workstation

A Dell PC is available for tutoring and testing. We offer volunteer tutors  to help you master the basics.  Please call 457-0310 ext. 150 to make an appointment with a tutor for one-on-one instruction.  This workstation is also available for patrons who need to take computer administered tests for coursework delivered by distance learning.  Reservations can be up to 4 hours long for testing purposes.

Printing

All of the computers in the adult area have the ability to print in black and white or color. Printing costs are $.10 per page for black and white and $.50 per page for color, payable with either coin, or paper currency ($1, $5, $10) when the page is printed. Pages waiting to be printed are stored on a print release station and unpaid or abandoned print jobs are automatically deleted after six hours.

Reservations

You can reserve computer time in person or over the telephone by calling 457-0310 extension 150. Walk on reservations can also be made at the PC reservation station at the library.  When you call, please let us know what it is that you need to do so we can assign you the computer or workstation with the approriate capability.

Ongoing Programs

Children's programs are a special and important part of what we are here at Liverpool Public Library. We spend a lot of time planning our programs to meet the needs of children birth through the teen years.

The two core programs are "Drop-In for Mother Goose" and "Drop-In for Crafts." Mother Goose is for children birth through three years. In it they hear stories, sing songs and interact with fingerplays. This program usually runs twice during each month.

The Craft program is one we're very proud of. This program runs one day a month from morning through evening in the Children's Room. Kids and their parents make seasonal crafts that have been selected for ease of construction and appropriate age level. Most of the crafts require cutting, pasting, and coloring.

Seasonal Programs

Our seasonal programs only run at certain times of the year. Our Storytimes run for ten weeks, usually in the fall and winter.

The best way to be informed as to when they will be available is to keep an eye on our calendar. Some of these programs may also be available during our Summertime schedule.

Special Programs

We also run one of-a-kind programs or we may hire a performer to come visit. We have had Harry Potter programs, American Girl tea parties, and unique craft programs (like tie-dye). The best way to know about them is to get on our mailing list (opens in a new window), keep an eye on our website, or to pick up a flyer in the Children's Room.

Connect with Wireless http://lpl.org/computers-and-computing/connecting-to-wireless http://lpl.org/computers-and-computing/connecting-to-wireless

Wireless Service, LPL Public Wireless

The Library offers an open public wireless network throughout the building.

  • Your computer's wireless card should automatically scan for available networks and connect to our network.
  • Please look for the SSID "LPL Public Wireless."
No password is requested, but you will be presented with a "splash page" agreement and must click the button that says "Proceed to the Internet."

  • On most wireless devices, the splash page will appear automatically. On Android devices, a dialog will appear in either the system tray or directly on the screen instructing the user to log on to the network.

  • If you are having difficulty getting a splash page to appear automatically, try launching your device's interent browser.
  • Keep in mind that wireless connections are generally not secure. This means that someone may be able to intercept your data, including your credit card numbers, passwords, or other critical information

Printing from your own laptops on our printers

wirelessprinting3.jpgWireless printing is now available within the library; 10 cents per page B&W, 50 cents per page color.

To begin, install the wireless client for Liverpool Public Library printing when you are here in the library.

Troubleshooting Connection Problems

Windows computers

  • Is your wireless card turned on? There may be a button or switch that turns your card on and off. It may be on the side of the laptop or the keyboard. Check the Hardware Manager to be sure the wireless card is working.
  • Make sure your computer is "seeing" the correct Public Wireless network.
  • Open your wireless card's software by clicking on the wireless card's icon in the Taskbar.
  • Windows XP includes a Wireless Network Connection feature. Right-click the wireless network connection icon in your taskbar and click "View Available Wireless Networks. " The Wireless Network Connection dialog box appears. If no networks appear, click "Refresh Network List" in the upper-left. Select the Public Wireless or FiOS access points and click Connect.
  • Start Internet Explorer. Go to the Tools menu and select "Internet Options." Click the "Connections" tab, the click the "LAN Settings" button. Make sure there is a check mark in the Automatically Detect Settings option.
  • You can repair your wireless connection by going to the Start menu and selecting "Connect To. " Select "Show All Connections." Under Network Tasks, click "Repair this Connection."
  • If you have a home wireless network, check to see if its IP address is in your settings. If so, change it to DHCP and your computer should then scan for a new connection.
  • If you're using a firewall, try disabling it. Be sure to reset it before you leave.

Macintosh Computers

  • If you're using OSX, go to Location (under the Apple on the upper left). "Automatic" should be checked. If you're still having problems select "Network Preferences." Click "Airport." The Location menu should be set to Automatic.
  • If you're using OS9, open the control strip. Click on the Airport icon and select the Public Wireless or FiOS access points to connect.
